Upper Mystic River

Not a bad day out, but not great either: Weather was hot and humid, water wasn't moving, and for most of the afternoon/early evening, couldn't buy a strike. That being said, I was able to pick off a smallmouth and largemouth near the High St. Bridge in my last 1/2 hour fishing, and I can't complain about that. Both were caught on a Zoom Trick Worm in Watermelon & Red Flake, fished Texas-rigged with no weight.

BTW: The largemouth photo is blury because I was lipping the bass with my dominant, right hand.

Also, just added a short video of me releasing the Smallmouth on my main profile page.

High St. Bridge Catch

  • # of Fish Caught: 8
  • Water Type: freshwater
  • Type of Fish: Smallmouth Bass
  • Fish Length (Avg): 10 inches
  • Fish Length (Max): 14 inches
  • Fish Weight (Avg): 1 lbs. 2 oz.
  • Bait Type: Worm Check Prices
  • Bait Details: I have had great success here using two types of worms: a Zoom Trick Worm and a Gary Yamamoto Kuhuna Cut Tail, both in Watermelon/Red Flake. Fish them Texas-rig, weightless, and fish slowly, letting them fall to the bottom.
  • Location Details: "The spot" is on the side of the bridge closest to Lower Mystic Lake. From the slabs of granite on the Medford side, cast across the river to the far side at the 12 o-clock position. Slowly work the bait down until it's on the bottom, about 10 feet out from shore, and slowly work the worm. There's a rock pile there I believe that that's where I find success with the Smallmouths. From the same position, you can make a cast to the 2 o'clock position about 30 feet out, letting the worm fall, but working it a bit more quickly, letting the bait suspend a bit. There's a grass bed in this area, and if you fish on the bottom there is a snag there. However, it appears to be a good place for Largemouth, so use a faster action on the retrieve.
